A language maintenance and development course intended for bilingual students who grew up in a Polish-speaking home and speak or understand the language to some extent, but have not had prior instruction in the Polish language and want to improve their language skills through formal study. The course focuses on vocabulary development, literacy skills, grammar, reading and writing, and it includes consideration of the relationship between language and culture. This course does not fulfill the General Education requirement for Humanities. Restricted to heritage speakers of Polish.

This is a special topics course focuses on issues relevant to the study of a foreign language and the cultures which communicate in it. This course is intended for foreign language minors or any other students who want to enhance foundation skills in reading. Please refer to course syllabus for a detailed course description.
WLAN 31100 - Reading and Writing Chinese 1 (3)
This course is primarily intended for students minoring in Chinese. Its main goals are to develop skills in reading and writing Chinese characters and to assist students in reaching Intermediate Level Proficiency in these same areas. It is the first course of two. Both courses focus on intensive practice in reading and writing in Chinese characters. Students will read narratives using Chinese characters, and these narratives will facilitate students' access to Chinese culture and literary tradition. Students will learn to write approximately 500 characters and type approximately 800. This course does not satisfy the General Education requirement for Humanities.

This course is a continuation of WLAN 31100 and is primarily intended for students minoring in Chinese. Its main goal, in conjunction with its prerequisite, is to assist students in reaching Intermediate Level Proficiency in reading and writing in Chinese. Narratives using Chinese characters will provide more information on Chinese culture and further access to Chinese literary tradition Students will learn to write 500 more characters and type nearly 800 additional characters. It is also intended for heritage speakers of Polish who want to develop facility in reading and writing in Polish, expand their vocabulary, and the repertoire of grammatical structures.
The main goal of this course is to assist students in reaching Intermediate High-Level proficiency in Reading and Writing in Polish.

Reading and Writing in Russian 1 introduces students to classic Russian literature from authors like Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Turgenev. The course focuses on reading comprehension and vocabulary expansion. Students will respond to simple questions about the readings, helping reinforce their understanding of key themes, characters, and cultural contexts. The course emphasizes acquiring new vocabulary and becoming familiar with Russian literary language. By the end, students will have developed stronger reading skills and be able to express themselves in writing by answering questions with increasing fluency.

Reading and Writing in Russian 2 continues the exploration of Russian literature, with more complex excerpts from works by authors like Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Pushkin. The course deepens reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition by engaging with more challenging texts. Students will respond to questions based on the readings. By the end of the course, students will have strengthened both their reading skills and their ability to engage with Russian texts in written form.

WLAN 35500 - Reading and Writing in Arabic 1 (3)
This course is primarily intended for students completing a minor in Arabic language and culture and assists students in reaching Intermediate Mid/High Level Proficiency in these same areas. The course can also be taken by heritage learners of Arabic who already speak the language but seek to improve their reading and writing skills. Students will read narratives using Arabic, and these narratives will facilitate students' access to Arabic culture and literary tradition. Students will also write about what they read.
WLAN 35600 - Reading and Writing in Arabic 2 (3)
The course focuses on improving students' reading and writing skills while reviewing and deepening knowledge of Arabic grammar and vocabulary. This course is primarily intended for students minoring in Arabic and is a sequel to WLAN 35500 Arabic Reading and Writing 1. Through this course, students will develop more intense facility in reading and writing Arabic, expand their vocabulary base, learn more idiomatic expressions, and read and write more difficult prose. It is also intended for heritage speakers of Arabic who want to develop facility in reading and writing in Arabic, expand their vocabulary, and the repertoire of grammatical structures.

WLAN 37500 - Readings in World Literature and Culture (3)
This course is primarily intended for students pursuing foreign language minors in Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, Polish and Russian. The purpose of this course is to promote intellectual growth and analytic thinking via the close reading of great works of World Literature within a global context. Focusing on works that facilitate a vision of the" wider world", and of interconnectedness, the student will learn how literary texts have shaped the groundwork for our contemporary global culture. The readings are designed to awaken the students' understanding of the discursive nature of literature, and of knowledge in general, and to lead them to understand that culture does not exist in isolation. No national literature has ever been produced in isolation; cultural production as always been a result of connections and interactions among neighboring cultures, and in our modern-day world culture, it is the sense of interconnectedness that defines the contemporary approach to reading world literature.

WLAN 49800 - Independent Study in a Foreign Language (1-3)
This course provides capable students with an in-depth understanding of the research and writing needed in preparation for graduate studies in a foreign language Language major seniors that complete this capstone course are provided with unique opportunities to broaden their knowledge of the target language and its influence on cultures around the globe Students in consultation with their advisor or mentor will select a narrow topic to explore throughout the semester. Topics may include issues in history, literature, political science, social justice, sociology, and so forth. The research product (a paper) must be a sustained study with a Works Cited page, using an appropriate parenthetical documentation style Quality research could result in publication, a desirable goal. The student who applies for an independent study in a foreign language must have achieved Low High-Proficiency in the target language
